Leona Martin—Community activist and Lexington resident since 1965
Leona was certainly among my most patient photo subjects. Leona and Charles, her husband of 55 years, moved to Lexington to raise their two sons in the excellent school system here. As a woman of color and a veteran of the 1960’s civil-rights movement, I wanted her integrity and sincerity to come across in the portrait. After a number of lighting adjustments, Leona’s natural beauty and spirit came across in this portrait. It was fascinating to talk with her about the 1960s and the changes that swept across our country. She was a wealth of information, and I walked away from the session a much better and more informed person.
